MONTEMONACO CHESTNUT FESTIVAL

Every year, during the last week-end of October, the Chestnut Festival takes place in Montemonaco, in order to promote the maroons of this area. This zone centuries-old chestnut woods produce nourishing, sweet and easy to peel maroons, as a consequence of their growing into an uncontaminated natural environment.

In occasion of the Festival characteristic stands are prepared in the old town centre. There you can taste cakes prepared with chestnut cream, according to ancient and genuine recipes (tronchetto, fried ravioli, the Sybil's nipples and many more) and the typical dishes of the "Old Tastes Cooking": polenta, beans and pigskin, broiled lamb among the others.

Wonderful naturalistic photographic exibitions are mounted inside the ancient churches of the village, while in the squares it is possible to attend the performances of jugglers and artists.

You can buy many tipical products at the picturesque market, while the boys living in the village, wearing the traditional mountain clothes, serve the roast chestnuts (cooked in big pans put above the fire) together with mulled wine.
